If you eat a Standard American Diet (SAD) that consists of fake food like low fat this, fat free that and don’t eat many veggies then you are probably in poor health.
Any small positive change you make is going to improve your health. Begin eating 3 pieces of fruit a day and that will have a positive impact. It may be small but it’s still something that gets you on the right track.
So there are millions of people who eat what they would believe is a crap diet and then they go vegan because they hear how horrible meat is. They hear that red meat leads to heart disease and colon cancer, makes you fat, and, well, it may not be ethical. They know veggies are real food as well as fruits. They probably begin eating whole grains and maybe legumes. Nuts and seeds, coconut products and avocado may be eaten as well.
Then there health improves. Why? Is it because they ditched meat or because they began eating more veggies, fruits, coconut, avocado, etc. while ditching fake food that comes in a box and can sit on the shelf for eons?
To answer this question with honesty we must also think about all the other lifestyle changes that people make once they go vegan or even vegetarian. The following are a few ideas at the top of my head…
- Ditch processed junk food
- Exercise (vs doing nothing)
- Drink less alcohol
- Quit smoking
- Manage stress more effectively
- Ditch grains
- Sunbathe for Vitamin D
- Eat more nutrient dense plant foods
- Vegetarians may eat pastured eggs and grass-fed, raw full fat dairy
- Get an adequate amount of sleep
