My Top 15 Paleo Staple Foods

Garlic Big

Pure paleo foods are incredibly mouth watering. I enjoy eating a variety of these foods for various reasons. With that being said, there are foods that I eat on a regular basis. I like to eat for as little cost as possible while getting as much nutrition as possible.

If you are like me then you may want to consider adding one of the following foods to your diet if you have not already. I am going to simply list the foods here and will elaborate on them including my cost in future posts starting next week.

My Top 15 Paleo Staple Foods

  1. Shredded Coconut
  2. Ground Beef
  3. Eggs
  4. Avocado
  5. Ground Turkey
  6. Mixed Greens
  7. Spinach
  8. Broccoli
  9. Salmon
  10. Berries
  11. Onions
  12. Garlic
  13. Tomatoes
  14. Bell Pepper
  15. Black Pepper

Black pepper is a spice but does have calories. In fact, 1 gram has 2.5 calories according to FitDay! This is by far the spice I use most frequently.

If you haven’t already then please check out my other posts that list my top snack foods and the two posts on foods to survive on. My staple foods are different as this list contains what I eat on a regular basis.

What are your top 15 paleo staple foods? Do they change often? Thanks for reading!

About Toad

Is my name Todd or Toad? I'm a world traveler seeking true wellness. I'm not a fan of labels but the following describe me best: minimalist, foodie, entrepreneur, adventurer, writer, cook.

  • http://www.primalgrub.com Thomas

I don’t eat a ton of fruit normally, but I totally went overboard on the berries today… and it was awesome.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Lol. I don’t think you can overeat berries!

  • http://ThorFalk.wordpress.com Thor Falk

So you consider nightshades Paleo? great news for me – couldn’t go without tomatoes…

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I sure do and so does everyone else. Only limit or avoid them if you start to notice symptoms from consumption.

I totally eat All those things on a regular basis, but i probably go overboard myself w/ the nuts, preferably almonds. I have about 8 pecan trees that line the fence up along my apartment building so i’m always in abundance of those w/o having to buy them;-> I for the most part have given up on all processed foods of any kind, the exceptional Reese’s every once in a while and i still love pastry sweets, cakes and cookies, so every once in awhile i allow myself;->

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I also used to eat a lot of nuts when I first went paleo. Today I know how to limit them, thankfully. All nuts outside of macadamias do have A LOT of omega 6 so I would be careful, especeially with the pecans. Cashews are decent at 2 grams per 1 oz serving and almonds are next in line at around 3 grams per 1 oz serving.

You can enjoy them for a period of time but eventually you will want to limit your consumption to 1 oz a day unless you are eating macadamias and/or LOTS of fish. Just a heads up!

Thanks Todd, i was wondering, is it bad to have that much Omega-6 and why? and on the fish, honest to God, I eat more fish than any other type of meat, seriously. I can’t remember the last time i even had ground turkey, chicken…barely at all, agood lamb steak is my favorite, once a month or so i love it. my fave fishes are Salmon, cod, flounder, inexpensive also.As far as seafood goes, i limit that a little more, but i love shrimp, shark, and mahi-mahi, tuna. I know bc of the mercury, to limit all seafood, so once ina while is o.k. and i only buy it wild or fresh water. I eat fish 3 or 4 times a week and anything else is a vegetarian dinner(but NOT a vegetrian). Another Question, I absolutely love Portabella mushrooms, mix them in a lot of dishes, are they a primal or paleo or both food?

        • http://primaltoad.com Toad

It is not bad to have X amount of omega 6. The key is balance. You want to get as close to a 1:1 balance of omega 6 and omega 3 as possible. Even a 4:1 in favor of omega 6 is very very decent and is probably about where I am at. You eat plenty of fish so you are allowed more omega 6 then the average person.

You only have to slightly worry about mercury in the bigger fish. I would eat shark sparingly. Salmon, the smaller tuna, sardines, mackerel, cod, mahi mahi and more of the same are all fantastic choices and one can enjoy these daily. Shrimp, lobster, crab are also great choices.

All mushrooms are paleo. Thanks for asking these questions! I hope this all helps.

I’m sure it won’t be long, the questions are always forming;->Thanks for the info.

Yep, those foods will get you a long way. I don’t know that I’ve ever had ground turkey, but don’t have anything against it. I personally don’t do tomatoes and peppers any more (nightshades, too pro-inflammatory for me and my auto-immune condition) but the rest is right on for me, too. In the last week alone we purchased: grass fed ground beef (last Saturday from my local farmer), eggs (same source), avocado (today),mixed greens (last week), spinach (today), broccoli (today), salmon (a little while back – smoked and canned), berries (black, blue and straw, today and earlier this week), onions (last week in our delivery of veggies), tomatoes (last Saturday for my wife).

Ground turkey is awesome. I love it. Sounds like my cart!

Staples… hm… well that’s pretty easy for me! Salmon Belly, Eel, Salmon Skin, Spaghetti Squash, Butternut Squash, Spinach, Black Cod, Eggs & Egg Whites, Paprika, Cinnamon, Green Beans, Hamachi and Sea Vegetables!

*I adore cherry tomatoes and bell peppers, but I never buy them because I find them far too expensive for how quickly I eat them! ;)

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Eel?! I would LOVE to try eel. I also have never tasted a sea veggie but want to badly. Yea the cherry tomatoes go fast around here too. Its so odd since the bigger tomatoes that you have to slice chill in the fridge a little longer…

Artichokes! Man, I love artichokes! I eat them steamed or grilled with a little olive oil and fresh lemon juice. Also, rarely a day goes by that I don’t have a salad with a few artichoke hearts tossed in.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I also love artichokes but don’t have them often. I have enjoyed 1 artichoke in my life. Where do you buy artichoke hearts? My mother bought a large jar at Costco a couple of weeks ago but they were soaked in canola oil…

As soon as I saw the picture of garlic, I knew we were going to be on the same page.

My list is similar enough to yours; I’m not keen on avocado or eggs, so would replace those with kale and mushrooms.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Really? You’re not a fan of avocado or eggs? Avocado is my favorite plant food!
