Is Taco Bell The #1 Least Healthy Fast Food Restaurant Chain?

Taco Bell

When you have a business your main goal is to make a profit. This is because without a profit you will go out of business. However, some businesses can get a little greedy and in the long term they will be crushed. I sincerely believe Taco Bell is one of these businesses whereas if they don’t change their ways then they simply will not be around anymore.

Taco Bell grabs the cheapest ingredients that they can find in order to sell their “food” for pennies on the dollar. They claim they have quality ingredients. I say this is a lie. They intentionally say this in order to lure you in. Everyone wants quality food. Taco Bell’s food is a far cry from quality. I recommend Moe’s Southwest Grill as they truly seem to care. Not only do they serve 100% grass fed beef, but they may soon start cooking with coconut oil.

I was going to do a post today that told you what I believe to be the 10 most healthy foods at Wendys. I then decided to checkout Taco Bell and was shocked. I am guessing you heard about the Taco Bell lawsuit that occurred earlier this year. Well, the suit has been dropped after dismissal by plaintiff.

Hey Taco Bell, do you really call this quality?

I want to believe that this is a joke. Unfortunately, it is not. Take a look at some of their “food” items. (I put quotations around food because I am afraid to actually call it that to be honest). I found all their “food” items from this link.

Seasoned Beef?

Beef, Water, Seasoning [Isolated Oat Product, Salt, Chili Pepper, Onion Powder, Tomato Powder, Oats (Wheat), Soy Lecithin, Sugar, Spices, Maltodextrin, Soybean Oil (Anti-dusting Agent), Garlic Powder, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Citric Acid, Caramel Color, Cocoa Powder (Processed With Alkali), Silicon Dioxide, Natural Flavors, Yeast, Modified Corn Starch, Natural Smoke Flavor], Salt, Sodium Phosphates. CONTAINS SOYBEANS, WHEAT

Really? You can’t do any better? Do you really think this is quality? Moes and Chipotle have quality. Hell, even Wendys beef is simply beef and salt!

Potatoes?

You would probably NOT go to Taco Bell to get potatoes. However, had I walked in there and saw potato bites I may have personally ordered them thinking that they were half decent. Oops!

Potatoes, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Soybean and/or Cottonseed), And/Or Soybean Oil, Enriched Bleached Flour [Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid], Tapioca Starch, Salt, Rice Flour, Dextrin, Spices, Leavening [Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate], Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Natural Flavor, Potassium Chloride (a Salt Substitute), Modified Food Starch, Guar Gum, Color [Oleoresin Paprika, Oleoresin Tumeric], Dextrose, Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate [to maintain natural color]. CONTAINS: WHEAT. Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Contains One or More of the Following: Canola Oil, Corn Oil, Cottonseed Oil, Palm Oil, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil), Enriched Bleached Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Tapioca, Starch, Salt, Rice Flour, Dextrin, Cornstarch, Spices, Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Natural Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Modified Food Starch, Guar Gum, Color (Oleoresin Paprika, Oleoresin Tumeric), Dextrose, Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate (to Promote Color Retention). CONTAINS: WHEAT Potatoes, Soybean Oil, Enriched Bleached Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Tapioca Starch, Salt, Rice Flour, Dextrin, Spices, Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Natural Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Modified Food Starch, Guar Gum, Color (Oleoresin Paprika, Oleoresin Tumeric), Dextrose, Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate (to promote color retention). CONTAINS: WHEAT. *Will Contain One Of The Ingredient Statements Above, Depending Upon Regional Suppliers

Damn. I really wish this was a joke. Hey Taco Bell, did you know that the best tasting potato has one ingredient? When I eat potatoes I like them baked with Grass-Fed Butter and some black pepper. That’s it! Magic!!

Steak?

Beef, Water, Seasoning [Modified Potato Starch, Salt, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Carrageenan, Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Spices, Hot Sauce (Aged Red Peppers, Vinegar, Salt), Citric Acid, Sugar, Dehydrated Vinegar, Soybean Oil, Natural Flavors, Soybean Lecithin], Sodium Phosphates. Sauce: Water, Seasoning (Salt, Caramel Color, Modified Food Starch, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Maltodextrin, Dextrose, Garlic Powder, Xanthan Gum, Onion Powder, Beef Stock, Vinegar Solids, Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Sugar, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Succinic Acid, Soy Lecithin, Beef Fat, Potassium Sorbate) Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, BHT. CONTAINS SOYBEANS

Oh boy… a little worse than the seasoned beef maybe? It’s hard to tell.

Tortilla?

I had to include this one since it’s possibly one of the most commonly consumed “food” items that Taco Bell carries. This is possibly the worst too!

Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine, Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Ground Corn treated with Lime, Vegetable Oil (Cottonseed Oil, Citric Acid), Contains less than 2% of the following: Salt, Fumaric Acid, Calcium Propionate and Potassium Sorbate (use as Preservatives). CONTAINS: WHEAT Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine, Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Ground Corn treated with Lime, Vegetable Oil (contains one or more of the following: Corn Oil, Soybean Oil) with TBHQ and Citric Acid (to preserve freshness), contains 2% or less of the following: Salt, Calcium Propionate and Potassium Sorbate (to preserve freshness), Furmaric Acid, Dough Conditioner. CONTAINS: WHEAT Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine, Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Ground Corn treated with Lime, Vegetable Oil (contains Soybean Oil) contains 2% or less of the following: Salt, Calcium Propionate, Potassium Sorbate (to preserve freshness), Furmaric Acid. CONTAINS: WHEAT Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine, Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Ground Corn treated with Lime, Vegetable Oil (Cottonseed Oil, Citric Acid), contains less than 2% of the following: Salt, Fumaric Acid, Calcium Propionate and Potassium Sorbate (use as Preservatives). CONTAINS: WHEAT *Will Contain One Of The Ingredient Statements Above, Depending Upon Regional Suppliers

Alright I quit. I have had enough. This is honestly getting out of hand.

Does Taco Bell Offer Any Real Food?

Yes! Their Cilantro is… Cilantro! I wonder if I could just order some cilantro next time I come in. I may seriously try it. Let’s see… what could I pair the cilantro with?

  • Lettuce
  • Lime
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes

Great! I know EXACTLY what I am going to order next time I go to Taco Bell. They make it incredibly easy. Cilantro, lettuce, onions and tomatoes. They have 5 Real Foods that are primal approved. Yippee!!

Please check back tomorrow for a post on Wendys. They actually have a decent amount of real food! Luckily I see more Wendys than Taco Bells!

When was the last time you ate at Taco Bell? What did you order? How did you feel? If I was in your town would you go to Taco Bell with me and order a cilantro, lettuce, lime, onions and tomatoes salad?

About Toad

Is my name Todd or Toad? I'm a world traveler seeking true wellness. I'm not a fan of labels but the following describe me best: minimalist, foodie, entrepreneur, adventurer, writer, cook.

  • jennachica

I know, it’s disgusting. I used to order chicken breast on a salad from Subway when I was in a pinch, until I researched the ingredients in their ‘chicken’:
OVEN ROASTED CHICKEN PATTY Oven roasted chicken with rib meat, water, seasoning (corn syrup solids, vinegar powder [maltodextrin, modified corn starch & tapioca starch, dried vinegar], brown sugar, salt, dextrose, garlic powder, onion powder, chicken type flavor [hydrolyzed corn gluten, autolyzed yeast extract, thiamine hydrochloride, disodium inosinate & disodium guanylate]), sodium phosphate.

Nasty. Corn syrup and brown sugar? No thank you.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Damn thats crazy. I wonder if there turkey, roast beef, steak, etc. are like that too – more than likely yes.

  • Mike

Taco Bell can be delicious in a disgusting, this-isn’t-real-food-but-i-like-it-anyway kind of way, but I’ve never thought it was anything close to good for me, or quality.

I can’t believe one word food items like “steak”, “beef”, and “potatoes” have so many ingredients! I don’t need sugar in my meat (or any of the other 90-something things they put in it).

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

You actually think its delicious? Alright, I guess I did at one time too. Its been a while for me and I won’t ever dare going in there.

      • Ande

I’m not defending Taco Bell in any sort of “you should eat there” way, it’s still awful for your body, but your post is a little misleading. The beef is, in fact, beef. Most of the ingredients besides the beef, water, salt, and sodium phosphates are part of the seasoning. I’m all about eating all natural foods, and cutting out chemicals and artificial ingredients, but I’m also not one to twist arguments to make them sound more secure. Taco Bell’s claim has always been that they use real USDA approved beef, and that’s exactly what they do. No one ever lashed out at them for their seasoning, which seems to be where all the actual controversy is. You can buy Taco Bell seasoning in the store and I’m sure that, once added to your favorite package of 93/7 freshly ground beef, it will taste exactly the same as the stuff served in the restaurant.

        • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Here is what I am not a fan of…

“Isolated Oat Product, Oats (Wheat), Soy Lecithin, Maltodextrin, Soybean Oil (Anti-dusting Agent), Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Citric Acid, Caramel Color, Silicon Dioxide, Natural Flavors, Yeast, Modified Corn Starch.”

You do not need any of this shit. No one can ever tell me that Taco Bell is healthy. It’s disgusting and no one in the world should be eating there. It’s more than just beef. And, its the worst beef you could possibly eat. I’m eating less and less CAFO beef. I hope to someday be eating only grass-fed. I think its possible.

          • Michael Day

Natural Flavors doesn’t sound so bad! But what the fuck is silicon dioxide and – wait, why does beef need an ingredients list in the first place? Anything in the ingredients list other than, “Beef, water, natural ingredients” and that shit isn’t food.

          • http://primaltoad.com Toad

            Exactly!

  • http://www.intentionalconsumption.com Stephanie

Yuck hate taco bell! I bet those tomatoes aren’t organic either! Just avoid all fast food and cook all of your food at home….that’s what we do!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Its what I do too. But, when your traveling and don’t have food around and are starving… Chipotle and Moes are the places to go unless you have something like an Elevation Burger around!

  • Jeremy

How about a review on Chick-Fil-A? They are delicious! They are as confused as the rest of the world about good fats vs bad fats as shown by there choice of peanut oil, but other than that they at least mean well.

    http://www.chick-fil-a.com/Food/Ingredients

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I prefer peanut oil over soy oil. I will be dissecting various fast food places over the next several months so keep checking back!

  • Emily

    You’re surprised by this?
All fast food is equally disgusting shit full of chemicals and “food products” that aren’t fit for human consumption. It’s not news. And it’s not only Taco Bell- I wouldn’t single them out as “the worst’ haven’t you ever read any other fast food restaurant’s ingredients lists before? This is all par for the course.

  • http://nourishedmeadow.com Erin

In another lifetime I used to work in group health insurance…..I actually had a policy years ago that owned a chain of taco bells. They wanted to implement a wellness program for their employees (which I applaud…). I seriously had a conversation with some folks at work and jokingly said “what are you going to recommend their employees eat?…..lettuce tomatoes and hot sauce?”. Its sad but that is the truth.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

That’s very sad. Its amazing too… when did this all truly start?

  • http://breeandguinness.blogspot.com Bree

Have you contacted Taco Bell to see what their stance is on this Toad? Do they feel comfortable serving this food? I wonder….

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I may do so. I wonder if I can turn any shithole around.

  • http://www.thehealthyteacher.com/ Jordan Figueiredo

Interesting indeed. Taco Bell was one of my favorite pre primal/paleo indulgences. It sounds OK on the surface, but that list of ingredients is pretty nasty to say the least! Keep on educating.

    Cheers,
    Jordan

I have friend that always used to say: “Taco Bell is cheaper than food” I guess now I know why. Looking forward to the Wendy’s post, since on a very very rare moon I like to order their Chili.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Wendys actually has some real food so I can’t wait to do the post either. It may come Thursday afternoon.

  • http://www.probiotics-lovethatbug.com Dawn

We don’t have Taco Bell in New Zealand but that list horrifies me. How can a simple food that is just – well, food – have so many ingredients.

You have a typo in the second paragraph. It should be “Their” not “There”

Back when I was a fat kid I used to get Grilled Stuffed Burritos all the time. With a couple of tacos and some soda to wash it down.

We stay away from fast food nowadays. I don’t think Taco Bell is the WORST fast food chain, they just got caught, you know?

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I think it is the worst. I dare you to find me a worst one. KFC MIGHT beat them. But, guess what? They are owned by the same company. There is nothing thats worse. McDonalds is a hell of a lot better.

      • http://bdowen.tumblr.com Ben

Do you have Taco Bueno up North? I think it might be worse :-)

        • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I have never heard of it. I can’t find a list of their ingredients. That makes Taco Bell the winner still :)

“McDonalds is a hell of a lot better.”
says the guy just assuming it’s better, and who’s probably never eaten at any fast food restaurants. gets paid by that stupid Moe’s place, and probably has no job. sitting at the computers at the library because that’s the only way he can get internet access since he’s so poor…

Ah, but at least their meat has beef as its first ingredient (listed by weight, isn’t it)? I switched my dog’s food about 18 months ago, and if you ever take a look at the “meat and…” dog foods, see how far down the list it is before you encounter meat. My mom’s dog food is glorified cardboard – meat comes 7th on the list of ingredients – and that’s to feed to an opportunistic carnivore…so I can see this being similar. (I am not saying we’re dogs, but when you look at what we feed our dogs in the name of nutrition – and what we consider food for humans – it’s all in the same boat).

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

      I guess that is a plus…

Dog foods are rediculous and I feel guilty that my family and I still feed him that crap. I could take the initiative and start feeding him real food. I will have to do this soon!

  • Martha

Came over here from Real Food Wednesday. I’d never heard of Moe’s so I poked around on their website. Any idea how grass fed beef could contain soy?

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Yea, I have gotten a lot of grief about that… I will be talking to the executive chef today I hope. This wlll be the first thing I bring up. Chipotle does not have soy in their meats. At least this is what many have said. So, Chipotle may be the winner.

  • http://www.echonicola.com Echo

Heya Toad. I’ve never eaten in Taco Bells. It’s famous, but doesn’t exist in my part of the world. I guess the quality food thing is subjective, which is probably why they can’t be scorned for that. I don’t know why simple things like steak needs so much extra stuff in it. Spices. I get that. Can’t go too long without a bit of spice.

Taco Bell is Mexican food. Mexican food needs flavor, spices, more taste to add more taste. Wendy’s is just plan hamburger and salt, which makes you yourself want to add more flavor with more salt pepper or ketchup. These things are added in the beef to maintain the great taste and feeling (do it doesn’t dry out. When you or your family cooks at home do they leave the food natural? or add things to flavor it up? Plus even if you go to a store to purchase tortillas they will read similar ingredients. They add these to keep the size and shape. If you knew deeper into the foods you would realize that.
The potatoes are seasoned. SEASONED. as well as other items there. If you get a tv dinner or some frozen french fries from the store you will also see that there are other ingerdients in those as well.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

actually McDonalds is probably the unhealthiest but taco bell does have alot of sodium and calories that will clog up your arteries they also have a decent amount of fat and and saturated fat

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

You have no idea what you are talking about. There is not a single food item that is healthy at Taco Bell. I will be disecting McDonalds menu within the next couple of weeks. I bet I find at least 10 decent foods. Thus, McDonalds is healthier.

      Taco Bell chicken:

Chicken Breast Meat with Rib Meat, Water, Seasoning [Maltodextrin(Corn, Potato, Tapioca), Spices, Salt, Garlic Powder, Yeast Extract, Carrageenan, Paprika, Onion Powder, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, Citric Acid, Tapioca Dextrin, Modified Corn Starch, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Inactivated Yeast, Chicken Powder, Grill Flavor (from Sunflower Oil), Dehydrated Chicken Broth, Chicken Fat, Trehalose, Smoke Flavor, and less than 2% Silicon Dioxide and Soybean Oil added as Processing Aids], Modified Food Starch, Sodium Phosphates.

      Taco Bell steak:

Beef, Water, Seasoning [Modified Potato Starch, Salt, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Carrageenan, Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Spices, Hot Sauce (Aged Red Peppers, Vinegar, Salt), Citric Acid, Sugar, Dehydrated Vinegar, Soybean Oil, Natural Flavors, Soybean Lecithin], Sodium Phosphates. Sauce: Water, Seasoning (Salt, Caramel Color, Modified Food Starch, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Maltodextrin, Dextrose, Garlic Powder, Xanthan Gum, Onion Powder, Beef Stock, Vinegar Solids, Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Sugar, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Succinic Acid, Soy Lecithin, Beef Fat, Potassium Sorbate) Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, BHT. CONTAINS SOYBEANS

      Sounds healthy to me!

  • nick

You guys are fucking stupid. Taco bell does use real meat this whole craze started by some ex worker running his mouth because he was angry he got fired. And he himself removed his lawsuit against Taco bell within a matter of days after realizing his lawsuit was. False. Taco bells uses 88% meat and the other percent is spices so before you go listening to some douche bag with a blog look it up for yourself first…

    • Michael Day

Taco Bell seasoned beef ingredients (via http://www.tacobell.com/nutrition/ingredientstatement):
Beef, Water, Seasoning [Cellulose, Chili Pepper, Onion Powder, Salt, Oats (Contains Wheat), Maltodextrin (Corn, Potato, Tapioca), Soy Lecithin, Tomato Powder, Sugar, Soybean Oil, Sea Salt, Yeast Extract (Contains Gluten), Spices, Garlic Powder, Citric Acid, Caramel Color, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, Potassium Chloride, Cocoa Powder Processed with Alkali, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Trehalose, Modified Corn Starch, Inactivated Yeast, Lactic Acid, Torula Yeast, Natural Smoke Flavor], Salt, Sodium Phosphate. Contains: SOYBEANS, WHEAT

I don’t know about you, but I don’t consider any of the following to be food, let alone part of what I would call “real meat”: Soy Lecithin, Sugar, Soybean Oil, Yeast Extract, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, Potassium Chloride, Trehalose, Modified Corn Starch, Inactivated Yeast, Lactic Acid, Torula Yeast, and Sodium Phosphate. So, I did look it up for myself. Real meat has one ingredient: meat. Seasoned meat has two ingredients: Meat and seasoning. I mean, come on, the second largest ingredient by weight in the “seasoned beef” is water. But hey, eat whatever works for you.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

What do you mean by 88%? Weight? Calories? Because spices weigh next to nothing my friend. Taco Bell is the worst of the worst. I don’t support meat that comes from CAFO’s. Sorry bud.

  • Jonathan

Yes, Taco Bell is not good for you at all. However, the quality of its food is not measured in the sheer number of ingredients that they put into their products. Still a good list, thanks for posting it.

  • serenamac

Are there ANY fast food chains (other than Chipotle) that serve real food. Have any national chains caught on to the “grass fed beef” movement. Just read THE OMNIVORE’S DILEMMA and my dilemma is now how to allow my 15 year old boy & husband to eat outside our home safely.

I used to love Taco Bell until we ate there one day and the lettuce tasted like bleach. So much so that I thought maybe someone had spilled bleach on the lettuce! Of course I didn’t eat it, then started looking up info about TB on the web…,they treat their lettuce with chemicals to make sure it doesn’t get infected with e-coli. GROSS. Don’t even eat the veggies. :( Poison.

  • Pingback: Is Taco Bell The #1 Least Healthy Fast Food Restaurant Chain? | Healthy Foods

  • Shane

It might be the most unhealthy, but I’ll be damned if it’s not the best tasting fast food joint in my area. McDonalds is terrible. I can’t eat there at all without gagging. Whataburger and Dairy Queen serve dry, tasteless patties, and their meals cost about as much as I would spend at a decent restaurant. Whataburger used to be good.. not anymore. Taste really counts for a lot.. I mean, not all of us spend time researching every ingredient in a fast food item. Then again, I rarely “eat out” at a fast food joint. I know it’s unhealthy, but I take it for what it is. If I’m only eating it every once in a while, and I’m looking for a quick fix, especially after drinking, I’m not overly concerned about the nutritional value of my meal. It just tastes fantastic. I deal with that.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

You really enjoy the taste? I am not about eating healthy 100% of the time. It’s just too stressful in the modern world. But Taco Bell? Really? It’s been years since I have eaten there but it used to be a favorite of mine. I can remember feeling sick just about after every meal there. Brings back memories! I guess that is the only positive.

  • brian

Curious that you say Taco Bell is unhealthy but never mention nutritional content. I’m confused. Why don’t you try comparing Taco Bell’s nutritional content to the other fast food franchises. Also, you say Wendy’s meat is only beef and salt as if that’s a good thing. Try eating a taco where the beef is only seasoned with salt! It will be bland and tasteless. The other ingredients are what make the meat actually flavorful. I’ve talked to dieticians who say Taco Bell has the healthiest food of any of the big fast food chains. Nothing you add to the conversation actually disputes that.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

probably because it’s a shitty school?

I wanted to leave a comment about taco bell and fast food and all that, then I read some of the comments. You are such an ass hole to these people following your blog. Even to the people making comment relevent to the content. ” you have no idea what you are talking about…”. Won’t be coming back here. Also, your “study” of taco bell is shit.

      Thanks Michelle. Such kind words.

Taco bell is disgusting. I can’t believe anyone would defend them.
