21 Day Sugar Detox Begins Today With A Slight Modification

Turtle Strawberries

“Bust sugar and carb cravings naturally.” This is what you are supposed to accomplish with the 21 Day Sugar Detox program.. It’s why I decided to finally take the plunge 3 weeks ago.

Except, I kinda… eh hem… failed.

That’s behind me. I love to fail. You should too. Learn from your failures.

Today, I begin again. I technically began yesterday after I enjoyed a Blueberry Banana Sangria Smoothie. I just want to complete a full 21 days so I’ll say that I am beginning today.

Are you ready to bust your sugar cravings? Join me. Please.

The Slight Modification

Diane Sanfillippo, the creator of this program, suggests avoiding white and sweet potatoes and all fruit except for one green-tipped banana or granny smith apple per day.

If you are engaging in intense physical activity such as crossfit then denser carb sources such as potatoes are allowed for pre or post workout nutrition.

I’m going to allow myself more potatoes and fruit.

Grand Rapids, MI is my home right now. In less than three weeks my home will be Olympia, WA. I’ve lived in GR my entire life. Moving across the country is… uh… kinda crazy. I don’t know for sure but I imagine it’s going to be extremely different.

Why add unnecessary stress?

I still want to “detox” myself from sugar. No chocolate. No wine. No added sugar. I’ll limit my consumption of potatoes and fruit but I won’t deviate away from them completely. I’ll focus on eating more carbs after an intense workout but I won’t shy away from a small potato at dinner after not much activity.

This is my personal choice.

It’s June. Strawberries are in season. Local strawberries are 5,539,485 times better than non local strawberries. You can bet I’m going to have some as a snack. Because I’m doing the sugar detox I’ll savor each and every bite a million times over. I just refuse to avoid the strawberry 100%.

Maybe you will follow the program exactly how it’s laid out. Or perhaps you need to make a slight modification yourself. We all need to make choices like these ourself. We know ourselves better than anyone else!

I’m moving across the country. Strawberries are in season. These are far from lame excuses in my mind.

Write down everything you eat in a notebook

If you want to go through this detox without messing up or if you want to learn from your mistakes (if you happen to make any) then I recommend you write down everything you eat in a notebook.

There is no need to weigh or measure anything. I enjoyed a salad yesterday and just wrote down all the ingredients that were in it. This included romaine, bell pepper, tomato, shredded coconut, kerrygold cheese, chicken, olive oil and apple cider vinegar. No measurements necessary.

Are you a member of pinterest? I just created a 21 Day Sugar Detox board. I’ll take photos of most of my meals and upload them to this board. This way you can gain inspiration to how simple it is to follow this program.

If you are on pinterest then consider making a board like mine too.

Hi, I love your page and have it set as my home page now :) I just had a quick question. You wrote that you eat potatoes. how many a day and are they only sweet potatoes or white too. I do crossfit and run 4 days a week. I just dont want any bloating, but would love a freekin potatoe!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

      Oh, wow! Thanks!

Yes I do eat potatoes. It’s intermittent. Over the past week I recall eating one white potato which was last night. In the past I may have 10 potatoes over one week. It just depends.

I enjoy all potatoes. White, russet, red, sweet. They are all nutritious. All healthy. Just toss the skin more often then not.

If you do crossfit 4 days a week then you can definitely safely eat potatoes as you please I would think! Potatoes are awesome for post workout nutrition.

Good luck with your move! I just moved from Denver, CO to Baltimore, MD. I feel your pain. It’s hard. You get homesick. Then you fall in love. Well, at least that’s the story when I moved to Colorado anyway. What’s not to love about the mile high city? Now that I’m in Baltimore, I get to eat crab…so that’s my trade off. Looking forward to seeing your meals. I’ve been primal for 6 months now, and sugar is my battle. Weight loss slows down… sugar is always to blame.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Thanks Kim! I am booking this morning so it is becoming more real every day!

I may have to live in Baltimore at some point! I am a huge fan of crab. I don’t need anything with it. It’s perfect on it’s own!

I’ll be posting some pictures of my meals soon. I’ve been writing everything down and taking quite a few pictures. I have just been busy with Jury Duty and updating my smoothie ebook!

Best of luck on your second attempt! I came across your blog yesterday and your article on the 21-day detox plus the recent stuff on “sugar = toxin” scared me into trying it for myself. So this is Day One. Like you, I am not giving up fruit, but I will cut out any products with added sugar, corn syrup, etc. and limit the white flour. I don’t need to lose any weight, but we’ll see if it gives me more energy.

    Jeff

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Good luck to you too Jeff! Why not ditch all white flour products too? I’m one week in and, well, it’s been crazy easy. I am glad I added this slight modification.

Update on my “detox” experiment. After eight days, I decided to end it for various reasons. The biggest reasons were 1) I ran the Ann Arbor Marathon on June 17, and no way was I doing that without quick carbs, and 2) dammit, I missed my chocolate. I’m glad I made the effort, as it halted a brief period of over-indulgence with sugar, and I have carried over a couple things to my everyday diet (more fresh fruit, very limited white flour). Kudos to everyone who’s sticking it out!
        Jeff

        • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Yea if you are going to be running a marathon then a sugar detox is not the best idea! How did you do?!

Missed your chocolate? I did too but easily went 3 full weeks without touching it. The thought rarely crossed my mind. It’s weird because earlier in the year I wrote a post on how I am addicted to chocolate. I am clearly not anymore!

Yes, at least you tried. You can always start again at any time. I may do another 3 weeks starting tomorrow or soon at least.

          • http://fitnessat50.net Jeff Jackson

Finished the marathon in under 4 hours, which was my goal given I’d run a PR (1:37) in a half two weeks prior. Needed every single one of those calories I sucked down along the way.
As for chocolate – if you’re as fond of it as I am and went three weeks without it, then I am unworthy to kiss your webbed feet. I did discover, however, that extra dark cocoa powder blended with lowfat milk and ice cubes makes a very acceptable substitute.
            Jeff

          • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Yes I love my chocolate and was easily able to go 3 weeks without it. I thought it would be a challenge but it was not.

Skim milk? I don’t drink commercial pasteurized milk… If I could get my hands on some raw, grass-fed whole milk then I would try that. I did use cacao powder in my smoothies once or twice I think. But that is definitely allowed.

I lived in Olympia for about 7 years–you’ll LOVE the Washington Delicious apples out there! Red on the outside, green inside.

Back when I lived there, it was all pine trees and the air smelled like Christmas all year round. Now, all you see is long lines of slowly-moving traffic, and the air smells of car pollution. Developers knocked the trees down, and now it’s condo-land. I wouldn’t go back if you paid me–even with the bike lanes, the higher gas taxes, good public transportation, and typical lack of liberal “isms.”

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Green on the inside? Really green? Can’t wait.

Oh, you wouldn’t move back… well I am going to love it there :)

Day 4 began for me today…my headaches and cold symptoms from Days 1,2 and parts of 3 are almost all gone. Feeling so much better and have lost 3 lbs already! Thanks for encouraging awareness about the 21 Day Sugar Detox…it was absolutely all the inspiration I needed to get it started.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Awesome! How are you feeling now? It’s 4 days later. I’m doing perfect with my slight modification and have been feeling great. It’s been crazy hot so I think allowing myself to eat fruit has been necessary really.

      • http://www.therantingsofshirleyvalentine.com The K Spot

Day 10 and still no alcohol, sugar, dairy, fruit, processed food, bread, etc….(following Rose Cole’s handout for the 21 day detox). Lost 4 pounds so far, the headaches and cold are gone and I am feeling super great! You?

        • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Awesome! Keep going! I am doing awesome with my modification of allowing fruit. Sometime in the near future I will follow the program to a T. I’m glad I am allowing fruit and potatoes though. I have zero desire for junk right now and that is the main reason why I am doing this.

  • http://simplifiedpaleo.com Kathleen @ Simplified Paleo

I have to restart tomorrow — I was doing it, then I drank a cider on day three. It’s going to be a long 21 days. I grew up in Olympia. I love it.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Good luck! Do you still live in Olympia?
