Toad’s Top 10 21 Day Sugar Detox Staple Foods

sugar

Are you addicted to sugar? Do you binge eat from emotional stress? It helps to have a few convenience staple foods around so you eat those instead of the junk food. I’ve done Diane’s 21 Day Sugar Detox 3 times and will be doing it in the future as well. It’s always nice to be strict for 3 straight weeks. I have bent the rules in the past but will soon do it as Diane lays it out.

The following are foods that I make sure I have on hand. If the following foods were always available to me then I would never binge on junk food. Continue reading to find out why and how.

Please leave a comment below with the tenth food! Tell the world what staple foods you have on hand in order to prevent yourself from binging on sugar and omega 6 fatty acid rich food (read: all processed foods).

1. Avocado – If you are hungry or emotionally stressed and have a craving for any type of food, why not grab an avocado, slice it in half and eat it with a spoon? If you need to jazz it up a bit then make guacamole (just smash up the avocado and then add salt and lime juice to start!) or use it as a base for smoothies. I love adding avocado to salads too. Did you know that a whole avocado has 0 grams of sugar?

2. Coconut flakes or butter – I prefer the taste and texture of coconut butter but eating coconut flakes will force you to slow down. Say what? Yea, I tend to choke on coconut flakes! Be careful with coconut butter; some are known to eat the whole jar! Artisana sells a good brand of the butter and Bob’s Red Mill or Let’s Do Organic are good brands for coconut flakes.

3. Beef jerky – I don’t need to say much. Beef jerky is expensive but if you can afford it then stock up. Know your source and learn how they raise their cows and you are good to go. I personally love US Wellness Meats beef jerky.

4. Canned meat like tuna, salmon, sardines or chicken – I LOVE Wild Planet’s canned Albacore tuna. One can has 3.2 grams of omega 3 fatty acids! That’s insane if you ask me. It’s wild caught and sustainable. Tuna is beyond nourishing and quite tasty too. Use it in salads and enjoy with avocado and olives! I am not a big fan of canned salmon or sardines but if you are then stock up! I mentioned chicken because for the past 2.5 years I have enjoyed the canned chicken from Sam’s Club and Costco. This is not the best, but if it’s going to prevent you from binging on junk then I say that’s a BIG win!

5. Veggies of all kinds – What are your favorite veggies? Stock up! I personally prefer to boil my veggies and save the water and drink it later! You can use it for soups too. If you find yourself binging then why not grab a bunch of veggies and cook them up your favorite way! Eat a few if you are still hungry and then save them for later.

6. Kalamata olives – These are as convenient as it gets with plenty of nourishment and no sugar. Olives are nearly pure monounsaturated fat which everyone agrees is healthy! I currently enjoy the big jar of kalamata olives from Costco. Don’t buy the canned olives!

7. Veggies that are botanically fruits – Say what? I’m talking about tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, squash, pumpkin, etc. These are all fruits since they all have seeds. Yet we treat them as veggies because they are not as sweet as some fruits like apples or peaches. They are more nutrient dense too. I’ve been a huge fan of cucumbers since the day I first had one. I used to add TONS of salt and now just add as much as I know my body wants (remember that sodium is a nutrient).

8. Eggs – You must have these in stock if you know your body tolerates them well. I cook my eggs sunny side up 90% of the time since I know I need to cook the whites but love the runny yolk. If you are always in a rush then why not boil some eggs? Or scramble a dozen eggs and save some for later. You can also make egg muffins and use eggs in various recipes. Having eggs in stock at all times is a no brainer!

And whatever you do, don’t you dare trash the egg yolk!

9. Bacon – Do I need to say more? Maybe I should mention that being afraid of bacon because of the nitrate content is a flat out joke!

10. YOU choose by leaving a comment below – Really! Have you done Diane’s 21 Say Sugar Detox before? Are you doing it with thousands of others right now? Help other folks out who want to kick that nasty habit. If I have the 9 foods above in stock then my chances of eating junk decrease substantially. However, we are all different! So please leave a comment below with foods that you make sure you always have on hand to prevent yourself from binging on junk food.

About Toad

Is my name Todd or Toad? I'm a world traveler seeking true wellness. I'm not a fan of labels but the following describe me best: minimalist, foodie, entrepreneur, adventurer, writer, cook.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Kelly.OC.Schmidt Kelly Schmidt

Could you say these are your top 10 primal foods as well? Regardless of sugar addiction? Btw, your new site looks awesome.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

No because I love my potatoes, bananas and fruit :)

Close though. I am going by Diane’s program and she has you skip the fruit except for one green-tipped banana a day. My top 10 food staples would in fact include bananas and all potatoes. I eat a lot of them as they are very nourishing and easily digested by my body.

  • Jessica

I know you mentioned veggies a couple of times, but raw sauerkraut specifically was one of my staples for the 21DD. One of my favorite snacks.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Oh yes! And Diane loves that too. I just don’t eat much of it myself YET. Thanks for the reminder!

  • http://www.wine-logic.com/ Dusty

Breakfast foods (the ones without sugar that is).

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Do you have any specific examples?

      • http://www.wine-logic.com/ Dusty

Bacon, Eggs with salsa, and of course bacon!

        • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

          Lol. Double up the bacon!

  • Jen

Full fat yogurt (if on phase 1 or 2). Green apples for sugar cravings.

    • Kristina

What brand of full fat yogurt is sugar free? I’m on day 17 and have been searching the whole time for it…with no luck.

      • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Any full fat yogurt is OK for level 2 of the detox. Have you bought the program and read the guidelines? The idea of this detox is NOT to be 100% sugar free.

Do you mean no added sugar or no sugar at all?

        • Fat girl

Can I eat greek yogurt? OR it has to be regular plain yogurt? Can I do organic yogurt chips as a snack?

          • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

If you want to follow the 21DSD level 3 exactly how it is laid out then avoid all foods that have any added sugar to them. So you may be able to do some greek yogurts. Just look at the ingredients. I have done the 21DSD 3 times but always had my own modification. The big thing is awarenes.

      • carlykablooey

Plain yogurt doesn’t have added sugar. I have bought both Dannon & the Dannon Greek versions of whole milk plain yogurt.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Indeed! What brand of full fat yogurt do you buy?

  • Rose

You mentioned a penchant for cucumbers. I use sliced cucumber (especially the English type) like crackers. Any thing you can dip or spread on a cracker, tuna salad, guacamole, whatever, can be spread on a cucumber slice.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Yes! They are perfect for that. I love my cucumbers with anything :)

    • Tom Hohl

good point! i was missing my crackers with tuna.. now it’ll be cucumber and tuna

  • Kiki

Toad and other 21DSD-ers – are you making a point to eat sugar-free bacon? Just wondering. I haven’t purchased the 21DSD yet but have started to eliminate higher sugar paleo foods like bananas, bacon… I assumed bacon would be off limits on 21DSD, given that most is made with sugar. Maybe the sugar content in bacon is so small it doesn’t matter? If that’s the case I am going to start gobbling some RIGHT NOW! :)

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

If you follow Diane’s guidelines then you won’t buy bacon with added sugar. To me, it’s no big deal at all.

      • Darcie

Even bacon that lists sugar as an ingredient has 0 grams of sugar listed in the nutrition info, so I’d assume it’s inconsequential.

        • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Exactly. It’s nothing to worry about. I think the key is being aware. That sugar in the bacon may end up being really good in the end anyways…

eggs!! deviled eggs with tuna, salmon and your favorite veggies with (homemade mayo of course). Two of these and you are getting everything you need and it’s like a tuna salad on the go.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

      Eggs, indeed. :)

  • Sam

coconut butter is my obsession! My new staple on this 21dsd is coffee with coconut oil emulsified in. Sooo good :) And no need for sugar in my coffee!

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Sam, have you heard of Bulletproof Coffee? It’s 1 cup Coffee, 2 TBSP grass-fed butter and 1 TBSP of coconut oil. Blend for 2 seconds and BAM! you have yourself one hell of a coffee drink! It was created by Dave Asprey from BulletproofExec.com.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rosann.gomez.5 Rosann Gomez

    Pate and bulletproof coffee

  • Cari P

I was going to say Bacon, so I am glad you already have that on your list. I like just cold meat, it has great protein and fills you up. Cold chicken from the BBQ, or for some healthy cold cuts like turkey, salami etc, make and easy great snack!

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Do you buy the Applegate Farms brand?

    • Aby Mae

I cook my bacon then freeze it after it’s drained. Love to Munch on it frozen!

  • mallory

Trader Joe’s roasted, lightly salted almonds – perfect for when a cracker/pretzel/chip craving hits.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Ah, yes, of course! Do they have blanched almonds do you know? I don’t do well with the skin on almonds.

      • http://www.facebook.com/terryduncan35 Terry Duncan

Just bought some sliced almonds-blanched from TJ’s….just started yesterday on 21DSD — have been eating WB – needed to rid myself of carbs…….toadally………thank you for what you do! AWESOME and great to feel soooooooo much better (at my age)LOL– I’m an oldy.

        • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

          Good luck!

  • Shannon

Bulletproof coffee made with butter and coconut oil plus different spices each day and some raw cacao powder and on the go macadamia nuts!

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

I have not tried it with cacao powder yet… I need to do this! What spices do you add to it? I tried it with ginger the other day… yum!

    • SierraMama

I just tried making my coffee this way over the weekend and its amazing! The only way I will drink my coffee from now on!

      • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

It does rock my world and many others… butter and coconut oil and then add some other stuff if you want. Vanilla extract is great.

    • myquirkylife

May I ask HOW you make your coffee this way? This is the one thing I miss as I’m doing a sugar detox, I was an avid Stevia user with half and half, but looking for other non-dairy/sugar ways to have coffee, without drinking it black (too harsh)….thanks!

      • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

I brew my coffee and then add 2T of grass-fed butter and 1T of coconut oil. Blending it for just 2 seconds mixes it will and get’s it all foamy. That’s it! Then once you get use to this you can add spices, vanilla extract, etc.

Q: Why is this email five sentences or less?
        A: http://five.sentenc.es

        • http://www.facebook.com/sandra.fairchild Sandra Fairchild

How do you blend these in without your coffee getting cold, do you actually put it in a blender, or do you use an immersion blender?

          • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

I put it in a blender. It’s warm after the fact but I just then zap it in the microwave for a short bit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mandie.myers.58 Mandie Myers

I work 12 hour night shifts and usually am hungry by the time I get home in the morning. I’ve made a spoon or two of coconut butter my bedtime snack. Does the trick! I also like having bone broth around, either for drinking or cooking with. yummy!

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Yes drinking bone broth can help a lot! And coconut butter rocks my world! There are 30+ coconut products and the butter form may be my favorite :)

  • http://twitter.com/heatherhalelaw Heather Hale Law

Almonds! I travel often, but even airport news stands and snack shops carry almonds.

  • debski

You mentioned eggs…I always keep hard boiled eggs on hand as well as a variety of nuts (almonds, macadamias, cashews) or home made sweetener-free granola. When I get snacky, I grab one of those and go!

  • Adrienne

Since I am trying to get off of coffee too, I find that having some fun peppermint or herb tea available is helpful. And it keeps you hydrated.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Ginger is my favorite. Peppermint rocks too!

  • Susana

Thank you! I am on my first day and running out to the store to purchase the items you suggested!!! I am so inspired to start this path in my life!!! Best regards, susana carpenter. :) :):)

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Sweet! Thank you and good luck! :)

  • Seagram Kern

Carrots. Whenever I get hungry after I ate I grab a carrot and wait if still hungry I grab another and drink like water.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chrissa.hunt Chrissa Hunt

Smoked salmon is a go-to staple for me whenever I need something yummy to munch on. It pairs well with anything. Eggs, greens, green apple.
