Low Carb Chocolate Almond Smoothie

Low Carb Chocolate Almond Smoothie

I created this smoothie recipe specially for all you low carb fans. Its a challenge to make a low carb smoothie and have it taste great. I “cheated” for this one and used stevia. Are you concerned about stevia? Please don’t be.

I met a caveman in Chicago who lost over 200 lbs. He is a stevia enthusiast.

Stevia is completely fine while on a Primal Blueprint eating plan. I’ll have awesome recipes in the future that are low carb without stevia. This one has it. It features almond milk and almond butter along with chocolate. Enjoy!

The Recipe

I measure everything in grams as well as the standard cup/spoon measurement for your convenience. If you own this food scale like me, then making smoothies becomes quicker, easier and less of a hassel.

What makes this smoothie low carb?

About 17% of the calorie count is from carbs. But 9 out of 20 of the grams of carbs come from fiber. Your body does not digest fiber. It instead passes right through. When that carb percentage is in the 10-15% range I will look at the fiber content and then decide if it is low carb or not. I think this one qualifies.

There is 25 mg of fructose…

Wow, this sounds amazingly delicious. This might be what I do with the potentially-overripe avocado I have in my fridge tomorrow morning.

  • http://manaloasblog.blogspot.com/ Tina

Wow! That looks great! It doesn’t taste like avocado though?

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Nope. When you add a little avocado it simply adds smoothness and nutrition :)

      • http://www.MattGuenther.com Matt

I was thinking the same thing. It sounds delicious until I read the avocado. It just doesn’t seem like avo would fit in, but none of your recipes have been bad so I’ll be giving this one a shot today. :)

Sounds awesome! Will definitely have to give this one a try!

  • Kristina

That link for the food scale goes to almond milk. Which scale do you use?

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Sorry! I just updated it! http://foodscale.primaltoad.com. You can’t go wrong with it. But don’t get the grey one like I did – it’s boring.

  • Dana

I’ve used avo in smoothies before. Depending on what else you add it doesn’t affect the flavor at all that I can tell. What it does is make the smoothie amazingly… well, smooth, and thick, along with adding lots of good fat and potassium without the sugar baggage of a banana. I like bananas, bananas are fairly healthy, but if you’re sugar-sensitive you still oughtn’t eat a lot of them.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

      Exactly!

  • Stabby

This reminds me to make some almond milk. The almond milk they have at the “health food” store contains some weird junk.

With regards to sugar sensitivity, I can eat a mountain of mashed potatoes with no problems so it’s not a carb thing, I think it is probably fructose malabsorption, I get bloaty and my belly looks bigger the next day. I don’t have problems with cooked tubers or raw vegetables, just fruit, it’s odd. I was always sensitive to soda and sugar and felt bad afterwards, and then when I started thinking about diet I ate a lot of fruit because it’s supposed to be healthy, but that was not a particularly healthy time for me.

So cheers to the stevia. I am in the camp that likes the taste of it when combined with other things.

I love that you added avocado to a smoothie I make often. I bet it’s a great addition!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

It most certainly is. Its a secret smoothie ingredient that not many people know about!

I am usually a green monster/Berry smoothie person, but I could definitely be converted to Chocolate Almond smoothies! It looks delicious! Thanks for sharing your recipe with the Hearth and soul Hop.
