Fat Makes You Fat. No. Carbs Make You Fat. Nope!

Obesity

Is protein next?

It wouldn’t surprise me. Many people tell us too much protein can lead to kidney failure. It’s possible. Did you know that you can die from drinking too much sprinkling clean water? On the other hand, you can’t go a week without water.

We live in a crazy, unpredictable world. Maybe it’s time that we stop blaming one thing for causing this or that. I love simplicity. However, if obesity was that simple then researchers would have found the answer by now. Unfortunately, it’s a little complicated. There is not one single factor that causes you to gain a little or a lot of weight over the years. Instead, there are dozens of different factors that contribute. Dozens. Eh, maybe hundreds…

Eat Low Carb. Lose Lots of Weight.

Millions of people around the world over the past few decades have limited their carb consumption and lost weight. Some will eat less than 100 grams while others will eat less than 50. There are even some true carnivores out there who consume maybe a gram or 2 of carbs a day.

How do we know for sure that it’s the carbohydrate that is doing the unthinkable?

Not all carbs are the same. It truly sickens me that millions place a potato in the same category as a can of soda pop. Go grab a potato and a can of Coke. Place them next to each other and start thinking of similarities and differences.

I’ll get you started with differences…

  • Potatoes contain fiber. Soda pop has none.
  • Potatoes are full of vitamins and minerals. Soda pop is… naked!
  • Potatoes are nearly tasteless plain and therefore it’s hard to become a “potato addict.” Soda pop is addicting.
  • Potatoes are inconvenient. You must cook them in order to eat. Soda pop is one of the most convenient sources of calories in the world and is everywhere!
  • Potatoes come from the Earth. Soda pop is man made.

See what I mean?

Potatoes do NOT make you fat. Fruit does NOT make you fat.

Can too much of either or make you fat? Yes. Just like how too much water will kill you. Too much of anything is toxic. This does NOT mean that you should avoid potatoes. Even if you are obese. I’m NOT talking about french fries from McDonalds. I’m talking about whole potatoes that you cook yourself and eat plain or perhaps enjoyed with grass-fed butter.

On a side note, this is why most studies I come across on the web are completely worthless. They fail to distinguish a hamburger with the white bun from McDonalds that is cooked at super high temperatures at a rapid pace and a grass-fed hamburger cooked on the stove in grass-fed butter. There is a huge ass difference between the two.

Reasons Why You May Be Fat

The following list is extremely short. One or two may be contributing to your weight problems if you have any. It’s possible that none of the following have made a contribution. Or, perhaps, all of them have at least a crumb of contribution.

  • Convenience
  • Boredom
  • Consumption of empty calories
  • Parents
  • Sitting on your ass all day
  • Palatability of food choices
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Exercising and hating every minute of it
  • Peer pressure
  • Lack of time
  • Vitamin and/or Mineral Deficiencies
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Failure to listen to your gut

And so much more! Leave a comment below if you have more reasons to add. For the post to be published on Wednesday, I’ll explain myself with the reasons listed above.

I think for me there are many factors also.
    1. Heredity (my Aunts and I are all the same size)
2.General lack of knowledge (I went to college and feel I was well educated, but after several stints at weight watchers, Nutrasystem, and Atkins, I was completely confused. They were all telling me to eat what I wanted, or to eat what they gave me, or on Atkins…don’t eat carbs, but hey, here are some highly processed bars and shakes that are fine. GAAAA! What? But when I read Primal Blueprint and Robb Wolf’s Book..it all started to sink in…and it was simple. Eat real food, and nothing else. Really? How could we all be so dumb?
    3. Addiction (I was totally addicted to sugar and carbs. The detox I went through looked and felt like a meth addict’s detox. My family was afaid of me…with good reason…but I made it through…and on the other side I see a longer life than I ever hoped to live. A future free from the extra 130 pounds I was carrying. A hope for a cancer and diabetes free old age.
We have been lied to and we bought and ate the lie.
    enough said :)

Can you elaborate on heredity? I mean, it’s easier for you to then get fat but if you were living in the wild as a hunter-gatherer then you surely would not become overweight. Realize, too, that women are supposed to have a decent amount of fat for reproduction. A body fat percentage in the 20′s is normal!

General lack of knowledge is for sure key. No one knows what to believe anymore. In this information age, everything contradicts one another.

And, yes, addiction definitely plays a role.

You lost 130 lbs?! That’s awesome!!!! Congrats! Go inspire the world!

    Noooooo!
I ‘have’ 130 pounds to lose!
42 pounds are gone but the rest are taking their sweet time to come off ;)
On the heredity point…I think it is more of an excuse to use, but seriously, when most people in your family are fat you tend to think it is something in your genes that helped you get that way.
I have friends who have THE most horrendous diet and are still size 8′s. I on the other hand was hardly eating but still gaining weight.
    ???
    Heredity? Maybe.

Oh, oops! It can take some time to lose the extra weight.

I think heredity does play a role. It is probably going to be harder for you to lose the weight compared to someone that comes from a family where everyone is thin.

I can get away with eating junk food as well as far as weight goes. But, your body weight just tells a very tiny part of ones entire health story. Ones height may even be incredibly misleading.

I just pinned this!! Love this! I want to say you pretty much covered all the reasons… ( I think??) The last one is the key to success I swear! If people were to just do two weeks of a journal taking notes of how they felt overall after a meal that they would make some major changes to their diet! People should be in tune with their bodies I meet so many people who have no clue- not saying I have this gut thing down perfectly but it has been an amazing/ painful ( lol) experience with food experimentation :)

Wait! There is one that could be added- though it may be akin to addiction- those with food intolerances- I found it is harder ( at least in my experience personally) that the thought that you cant eat something just pisses you off and you have a binge fest and pay it for it later- creating a vicious cycle! of binging on foods you cant eat… especially if you find out about the intolerance later in life- I think it can be a big struggle for some…

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

What if you replaced that food you have an intolerance for with something else? Find something that you can tolerate as well. When you think about eating the food you have an intolerance food just eat the replacement food instead. Overtime you can probably build up a habit of eating this food that you do tolerate well. Maybe its cucumber or something…
