13 Tips to Make The Paleo Diet A Breeze

Beauty

There are thousands of different tips that could potentially make the Paleo Diet a breeze for you. The following tips are general in nature. Don’t think you have to follow them all at once. Instead, pick one tip and begin to implement that into your life. When that tip becomes a habit, pick another one and work on it till it becomes a habit.

1. Experiment

You are not Hurley or Kate. Eating less than 50 grams of carbs a day works for thousands of people. This does NOT mean it will work for you. In fact, it may be devastating for you. Millions of people are fructose intolerant. The best way for you to find out if you are fructose intolerant is to experiment. Eliminate fruit for 30 or so days and see how you feel, look and perform. Add it back in. How do you look, feel and perform now?

Thousands (millions?) of nutrition studies have been published to date. How do you know which one is right or wrong? Ignore them. Do what you feel is right and then study yourself.

2. Move on – Don’t feel the guilt

You will fail. You will eat something that a “normal” person feels guilty about. Why feel guilt? What’s the point? What if you just moved on and forgot about what happened? From my personal experience, feeling guilt over a binge is a recipe for complete disaster. Thinking negatively about the situation causes me to eat more. If I enjoy each moment and just move on then I tend to melt the small negative snowball in a split second.

I did a post a while back on how to cheat without feeling guilty. The gist of the post is to simply move on. Are you ready to move on?

3. Educate yourself and others

Read blogs. Read books. Listen to podcasts. Experiment on yourself and learn from your experiment. Try new things. Take action. Be ok with failing.

The longer you live a primal lifestyle, the more likely your friends and family will begin to ask you questions. Answer them to the best of your knowledge. Educate them but understand that you don’t have all the answers. Once they dive in, ask them questions. Find out what their approach is. Learn from their experiences and continue to learn from yours.

This is a life long journey folks!

4. Blog

Blogging about the primal lifestyle has kept me on track. I’ve had my ups and downs including a 3-4 month period when my eating was disastrous more times then I can remember. Having this blog kept me honest. Telling myself that I’ll blog for years to come has forced me to stay on track. I’ve “fallen off” but I have gotten right back on. I move on. I educate. I blog.

Starting a blog is cheap too. In fact, it can be FREE. If you want to have your own domain then it will cost ya about $10. I currently pay $10 per month for hosting too.

5. Plan your meals

I don’t personally plan my meals but if I did then I’d probably “cheat” less frequently. If its in your interest, then take an hour or so every Sunday and plan out your meals for the week. Make it easy and eat the same thing a few days in a row. Or, think of 5-7 meals that you are going to eat for the entire week and rotate them. Always have snacks on hand.

6. Follow recipes

There are thousands of primal/paleo recipes on the web that are available for FREE. Just google “primal recipe” or “paleo recipe.” Or, maybe you want something specific like paleo meatloaf or paleo garlic pulled pork.  Smoothies are awesome too in my personal opinion.

Once you follow a recipe or 2, you’ll hopefully think of something that you can create on your own. Following a recipe will hopefully bring out the creativity in you. Maybe someday you’ll create your own paleo cookbook!

7. Create recipes

Follow recipes and then create your own. There is no need to be fancy. If a recipe calls for oregano then substitute caraway seed. I mean, why not? I throw caraway seed on anything.

I’m a big fan of smoothies. I decided to create a recipe book, Toadally Primal Smoothies. It may have 150 different smoothie recipes with hundreds more coming, but that does not make me an expert. They are easy to create. Sure, making smoothies on a consistent basis for 7+ years has helped, but once you make a few you could very well gain momentum and be off on your mary way. The recipes on the primal smoothie blog are free. Follow a few and then make your own.

8. Don’t eat free non paleo food

I’ve been guilty of this way too much. When you are struggling financially, you’ll generally be more lenient in allowing yourself to consume free calories no matter how they come. However, doing this can easily put you off track. This is especially true during the holidays. The primal movement is getting huge but there is probably about 4,539 people who don’t give a rat’s ass about their health to every 1 that do give a rat’s ass. I made this number up but hey, I just want to make my point.

This means that most people will stuff themselves without much care. If you are ok eating any food that is free then you are setting yourself up for disaster. Enjoy your Christmas meal and be grateful but be careful at the same time!

9. Shop at your local farmer’s market

It’s a lot easier to buy junk food at a normal grocery store compared to your local farmers market. Most farmers markets will still have bread and such but the selection of fresh produce, meat and eggs is definitely present. I guarantee it will be easier to stay on track if you make it a priority to buy food where you should be buying food.

10. Keep meals simple

Eat ground beef with peas. Bacon with eggs. A smoothie. Don’t feel like you have to eat a vegetable for every meal. Don’t feel like you have to eat meat for every meal. Don’t feel like you have to eat anything at all every single time its “meal time.” Be ok eating ground beef every day for a couple of weeks. It’s the cheapest cut of meat and if it’s grass-fed then its pretty freaking healthy. Your heart will thank you for eating the saturated fat. I’m serious. Saturated fat is heart healthy.

11. Leftovers rock

Make more then you can eat. Put a reasonable amount on your plate. Smile over the fact that you have a lot leftover. You just saved your ass a lot of time my friend! Eat leftovers at any point during your day. What’s wrong with leftover chuck roast for breakfast? Not a damn thing. So do it. Ok?

12. Eat dinner for breakfast

I am very curious where the idea of eating certain foods for certain meals got started. Maybe we should stop having names for meals and instead just eat when we are hungry. Forget breakfast, lunch and dinner. Instead, eat when you are hungry. Be ok eating a salad at 7:43 in the morning and eggs at 7:43 pm. There is nothing wrong with this. I promise.

13. How happy are you?

While these tips may help you, and I hope they do, you must ask yourself how happy you are. If you are constantly stressed then please take a step back. Be grateful for all that you have. Be grateful for the simple fact that you are living. No one knows when their time will be done. You must enjoy life NOW instead of waiting. Don’t be perfect. Your imperfections are what make you perfect.

Do the best you can. Realize that you are living in a modern world. A world where you are surrounded by junk food. Seek happiness. Contentment. Be ok with your mistakes. In fact, make mistakes. Fail. If you don’t fail then you are being too careful.

Live today. Ok?

What tips can you add to this list? Do you want me to elaborate on any tips? Do you agree with these tips? Disagree? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. Just leave a comment below. And, if you think this post can help others then why not share it on facebook or twitter?

About Toad

Is my name Todd or Toad? I'm a world traveler seeking true wellness. I'm not a fan of labels but the following describe me best: minimalist, foodie, entrepreneur, adventurer, writer, cook.

  • Charli

4,539? That’s a very precise made up number Todd.
    Some good tips here.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

      Lol. Thanks!

  • merryxmaspaleos

I’ve been on the paleo wagon 5 months and its the best! But how do I get others to accept it (I’m a freshmen in college, surrounded by an ocean of Ramen.) Also how to give up refined sugar?? & what I would add to tis list is foods ppl aren’t aware they can still eat!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

College kids are going to be college kids. You can definitely find some people who can be on board with you if you go to a big school but it can be a challenge. I don’t have much advice with this since I went to a community college for 2 years and then attended 1 full time semester and 1 part time semester at a bigger school.

      • merryxmaspaleos

O I meant just how to keep it from being so awkward. at events and at other peoples houses I’m often hungry & friends try unsuccessfully to find food I can eat. I do make it easier by explaining I’m allergic to gluten and dairy! My college is a community college too :)

I can’t plan meals ahead to save my life, but I can defrost ahead, so I do the opposite: reverse menu planning, which is just keeping a stocked freezer, fridge, and cupboards, and making selections from that. These days, the old “buy what’s on sale (or what you have coupons for) to plan your menu” just doesn’t work for two reasons:

    1. Much of the food isn’t Paleo-compliant
    2. Most Paleo-compliant food isn’t on sale in the flyer, or even in most grocery stores
    3. They don’t make coupons for Paleo-type foods–theoretically, we’re already buying rock-bottom

The best we can do is make OUR OWN stores right in our own homes, by stocking the freezer, fridge, and cupboards, and cease receiving grocery store flyers at all. We know what foods we can eat, we know what sources are good ones, and we know what seasons provide what foods cheapest. Grocery store flyers be damned! Plan meals with what YOU’VE got, instead of what the store’s got! What you spend on clean, decent food now will pay dividends later in lowered health care costs.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Right on – just about all coupons and sales are for processed foods! That is a great tip to just stay stocked. Save money so you can buy a quarter or half a cow. This way you know you always have something to eat. One can defrost meat quickly and safely by dunking it into cool to semi warm water for an hour or 2… it works for me!

I agree that most meals should be simple, (i.e. meat, big salad with several veggies) but it also helps to have a few great recipes in your arsenal that may require more prep time or an unusual ingredient. Make something like that once a week or so. Keeps things interesting. (Paleo jambalaya with cauliflower rice and Caribbean stewed veggies are two of our faves.)

Find a couple of good salad dressing recipes and have some made up in the fridge rather than mixing it up each time you make a salad. Or make a batch of salsa and use that for salad dressing.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I think one should do both… make it simple most of the time and the when one has more time follow a killer recipe that makes them excited! Then create your own recipes from there.

Having homemade dressing available can be huge but I tend to just throw on oil and vinegar and/or lemon or lime juice along with seasonings… when you are willing to add any herb or spice then it tastes different each time!

  • http://www.myprimaladventures.blogspot.com MyPrimalAdventures

Well said, Todd! I must say, I suffer most with making things over-complicated–we went Primal in early August and only this past month have we realized that simple food is most easily accepted by all, so now we alter our own recipes rather than cooking other people’s ideas so often. But I am definately an opportunistic eater–if it’s offered, I just say yes. I struggle with this one. My coworkers are slowly learning what I’m really trying to eat and what to avoid, and we’re getting better at picking places where I can get simple meat and veggies on eat-out days. But I still struggle with it–I always fall apart on the desserts. No sugar, grain or starch is easy with the main course. But who can say no to german flourless cake????

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Lol. It takes time. Being patient is the key I think. This is a lifelong journey so keep that in mind. You will fail. Move on. Fail again. Move on. Learn from your mistakes. Do your best to limit stress. Smile and be grateful you have discovered Primal.

I love this comment so much I printed it to remind myself I can do this. Thanks Toad :)

Nice post, Toad. I would have added a line encouraging people to grow/raise/hunt/fish their own food. Nothing’s cheaper than a dozen pastured eggs that you raise yourself!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

For sure! That would cut the food costs down tremendously!

  • Eric

    Very cool stuff!
Thanks so much, just starting my journey and your blog is inspirational.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Thanks for the kind words Eric! I wish you a lot of luck on your journey!

  • http://itcantbe2012already.blogspot.com/ Lynn

I think that your number 1 point is so important. So many of us think that we have to find a plan to follow exactly as written but it is important to know your own body and how certain foods impact it. This is something I have been struggling with but hope to figure it out as I go primal this year.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Good luck on your primal journey!

  • merryxmaspaleos

toad do you think tubers are paleo friendly?

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

They are friendly to me. Go for sweet potatoes more often.

  • http://www.friskylemon.com AllieNic @ Frisky Lemon

Love these! Especially the “don’t feel the guilt”– that’s so important.

There’s so much more to eating than food– non-food areas of your life can definitely affect your food choices. Eating can be emotional and mental…it can take time to make that connection between the food you eat and how you feel. Sometimes, even knowing how your body negatively responds to food isn’t enough to keep you from eating it…

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

I agree! Your food choices are heavily influenced by other areas of your life – no doubt about it. And, you are right on the last point too… I have experience with this! Lol.

  • Amy

I just read about a gal who lost 12% body fat in 2.5 months, doing strict paleo, eating 5 small meals that consisted of meat and veggies. . .you mention not eating veggies with every meal? Just curious about your thoughts on this. Also, what are your thoughts on coffee? Do you crossfit? :)

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Are you talking about this? “Don’t feel like you have to eat a vegetable for every meal. Don’t feel like you have to eat meat for every meal.”

I am saying to simply don’t feel like you have to eat meat and veggies at every meal. If its easy for you to do so then go for it! But, sometimes one may not have meat ready or may not want to cook veggies or prepare them. That’s just fine! It’s just not necessary to eat meat and veggies at every meal. We need certain nutrients over a week, even a month or longer period… not daily!

My thoughts on coffee? Check out this post: http://www.primaltoad.com/coffee/

I don’t personally drink coffee. I think its ok here and there. But if you are relying on it to give you energy, if you can not go a week without it then I say… quit your addiction!

I don’t crossfit and never have. But, I am interested in trying it out sometime soon :) Checkout this post: http://www.primaltoad.com/why-crossfit/

Todd – Thanks for this list and for this site! I’m a newcomer to Paleo and I could use some guidance that’s written for the average person. Your site is definitely going on the Favorite’s list – I’ve got some reading to do!

By the way, after reading #3 I contacted a friend who I suspected was doing Paleo and she is! We have plans to share notes later today!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Thanks for commenting! I may be doing another tips post soon so stay tuned for that! Glad to hear that one of your friends is doing Paleo – this will certainly make it easier! I’ll be doing all that I can to continue the growth of this incredible community.

    Hey Toad!

I just discovered your blog via http://www.paleoonabudget.com via http://www.ilovefetacheese.com … I just love the blog world! :-) Each day you discover more great blogs!
Actually I am currently not following a paleo diet but I have been introducing some changes. I have severe migraines and found a couple of books that recommend paleo style to help with the amount of attacks. I already found out that I have hypoglycemia and that’s why I don’t do well with simple carbs. I crash heavily! That’s why I’ve introduced protein at every meal. I also found out that my body thrives on more fat than recommended. And now I have decided to try a paleo approach … and I just really like what I read when I browse through your blog! It’s reassuring to read that what I am doing is just fine, namely adjusting my diet to whatever suits ME best (and if that means mixing several approaches, that’s ok).

Looking forward to coming back to your blog, Toad!

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Glad you found me! Baby steps can go a loooooooong ways! Do what YOU want. Listen to YOUR body. Experiment a lot. Our diets are always evolving based on dozens of factors! Fat is awesome. Enjoy as much grass-fed butter as you please!

Let me know if you have any questions! I’ll be publishing lots of great posts in April and beyond. This is something that did not happen in March unfortunately.

  • http://thecauliflowercapers.wordpress.com/ Ang

Great list, Toad! To #11 I would add… The Freezer Is Your Friend. We all have days when we feel crap or just can’t be bothered to cook. On those days I grab a bag of chilli from the freezer and I have a super-easy dinner. Eat as is, or add cauliflower rice, salad, guacamole… whatever you have the energy to add to it.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Great idea! We need to do that more often around here. I enjoy making more then I can eat at one time so leftovers are available for at least another meal or 2. Soups are great for this.

  • Annie

I like that you addressed a variety of issues, especially number 8 (Don’t eat free non paleo food) that is not discussed as often. I come from a, well, poor family, and I would jump at every chance for free food. Obviously, the foods would usually be cheap, very sugary baked goods bought in bulk. Even now, I have a hard time resisting free food. A few months ago, people had leftover boxes of glazed donuts and muffins from a party and asked for people to take them home–which I did. My parents have conditioned me never to throw away food, just like they taught me never to leave food on a plate. (They think it’s a disgrace that so many American school children are allowed to toss away lunch leftovers in the trash.) I still find it difficult to relearn my habits and to tell myself that the large box of junk food, no matter its monetary value, is still . . . well, junk food.

    • http://primaltoad.com Toad

Take it slow. Work on one thing at a time. Realize health is an endless journey. Saying “no, thank you” just once can go a long ways. Momentum can bring you to the top. You need to start somewhere wherever that may be.

  • http://twitter.com/TheRealAndra Andra

Dinner for breakfast! This one was a little work for me and now it’s not an issue at all. Savory breakfasts are great! When did this whole “breakfast must be sweet and grainy” start? When the cereal companies realized how much money they could make, that’s when.

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Exactly! I just enjoyed eggs and watermelon for Dinner. I enjoyed a salad with grass-fed hot dogs for breakfast! A meal is a meal… eat whatever you feel like eating!

  • z man

I must say 13 th tip is the best one. It rounds it all off very nicely…the world is stressed out and relaxation of mind and thankful thoughts are exactly what you need to achieve a goal. Very nice lol

    • http://primaltoad.com/ Todd Dosenberry

Indeed! We are too stressed and all need to slow down a bit.
